Before you accelerate
  • Business use must stay above 50%. If it drops below that in a later year, the IRS can recapture — add back as income — part of the deduction you already took.
  • This locks the vehicle out of standard mileage, permanently. Once you depreciate under actual expenses in year one, you can't switch to standard mileage for this vehicle in a future year.
  • It's a timing shift, not free money. You're pulling future years' depreciation into this year. In a low-income year, that acceleration can be worth less than spreading the deduction out.
  • Documentation standards don't relax. A large first-year deduction is a common audit flag — a contemporaneous mileage log and business-use records still apply, even at high or 100% business use.
